Chogan hesitantly knocked on the office door.

“Come in.”

He opened the door, nervous as hell. “Umm, hi.”

“Chogan, what can I do for you?” Dominic asked, reclining in his chair behind the desk.

“Well, I...”

Dominic chuckled. “There’s no need to be nervous. I know you just started living here, but I don’t bite.”

“I know that.” Chogan took a deep breath. “I wanted to thank you for letting me and my mother stay here.”

“It’s nothing. Not only did you save Keenan when he needed help, but you’re also Jared’s mate. You’re welcome here, and you’ll soon become part of the family, you’ll see. Some days you might want to run away, but they grow on you.”

The smile he gave Chogan was wicked, and he felt a little better. “I just wanted to ask if there was something I could do for the pride. I want to help, and I can’t really look for a job. I, well, I never went to school, so I can’t do much, but—”

“Is there something you want to do? You could help Jared in the infirmary, or help taking care of the house, maybe do security. You could also work for the council. Enforcers never seem to be enough. What did you do in the tribe?”

“Not much. I took care of repairs, you know, keeping the wigwams together and things like that. I’m not sure how good I could be at fighting, so I’d rule the enforcer role out, but I could do security if it involves only the house.”

“What would you want to do? I’m not asking what you can do, Chogan, but what you want.”

This wasn’t something anyone had ever asked Chogan. In the tribe, he hadn’t had a choice, but he had been lucky enough to actually like what he did. “Do you need someone to repair stuff around the house?”

“For the small things, yes. Ward and Bryce work in construction, and they’re the ones doing the extension on the house. They try to take care of the smaller problems too, like when Nysys blows the kitchen up, but they don’t have much time between their outside jobs and the patrolling they do for the pride, so it would be a big help if you decided you want to take care of that.”

Chogan’s eyes widened. “Nysys blows the kitchen up?”

Dominic laughed. “It happened more than once, and I expect it will happen some more. He’s a Nix, and he lived with his tribe until a few months ago. He had never cooked before, and he decided that’s what he wants to do with his life. He’s just not very good at it at the moment, and he usually ends up doing more damage than anything.”

“What happens when he blows the kitchen up? How do the pride members cook?”

“We get a lot of carry-out, and the members who live in the cabins help. Luckily the damages aren’t usually so bad we can’t cook.” Dominic grimaced. “It’s actually pretty funny when I think about it now, but at the time it definitely wasn’t.
